Coral Reef Safe Sunscreen

Did you know that tropical coral reefs are very productive ecosystems and provide homes for an enormous number of sea life which is also of immense value to humankind? They form the nurseries for about a quarter of the ocean’s fish and can yield around 15 tonnes of fish and other seafood per square kilometer each year, not to mention reefs provide Coastal protection: and are the source of medical advances.

One of the ways we can work together to protect our beautiful coral reefs, in addition to reducing our trash, but also using safe sunscreen. When you swim with sunscreen on, chemicals like oxybenzone can seep into the water, where they’re absorbed by corals. These substances can disrupt coral’s reproduction and growth cycles, ultimately leading to bleaching.

Traditional sunscreens that use chemical ingredients (like oxybenzone and octinoxate), work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat, which is released through the skin. But Reef Safe sunscreens are mineral sunblocks that contain ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sunscreens with the term “non-nano” on the label.

Luckily Women’s Health Magazine put together a list of few that are not only reasonably priced but easily accessible. We’re excited to try GODDESS GARDEN ORGANICS EVERYDAY SPF 30 NATURAL SUNSCREEN.
